It is not a category of luxury so much as a category of control. On a shared day the schedule sets where you stop, how long for and when you leave. On a private day you do, and on this road that is worth more than it sounds.
The clearest difference in the whole inventory. Three private charters are quoted for the vessel — $769 for up to six, $1,053 for up to five, $1,301 for up to six — so the per-person cost falls sharply as the party grows. Six people on the $1,301 boat pay about $216 each for a boat nobody else can board.
Every private car here collects from a hotel, an apartment or a cruise terminal, and the private boats will come to a named pier of your choosing — one lists twenty-one of them between Positano and Salerno. No shared day on this coast does that.
Three of these listings state it outright: there are no fixed restrictions and the day can be shaped around what you want. In practice that means holding longer somewhere you like, dropping somewhere you do not, and stopping for a photograph nobody scheduled.
One private minivan states that the vehicle itself is wheelchair accessible and that infant seats are available. On a coast built on staircases, that is not a comfort feature — it is the difference between a possible day and an impossible one.
One private day asks for the ship's name, its docking time, your disembarkation time and your re-boarding time at the moment of booking. Two of the shared road days refuse cruise passengers outright.
The honest comparison, because for two people the shared option is usually right.

Party size. Below three, a shared day usually wins. At four or more, compare the per-boat charters against four shared seats before assuming they are out of reach.
Booking window. Earlier than a shared seat, because there is one vehicle rather than twenty-one places. A week ahead in July and August.
What to say when you book. The pickup address; any mobility or infant seat requirement; and, if you are on a ship, all four of the times the listing asks for.
What to say at pickup. What you want more of and less of. That is what you are paying for, and a driver cannot read your mind at the first stop.
If you are one or two people on a budget, take a shared day: the cheapest guided day on this coast is $109 and visits the same three towns as a $331 private car.
